The Eunoia Project
EUNOIA (n.): a pure and well-balanced mind; “beautiful thinking”
In coming across the word, I was inspired by “eunoia” and its definition of “beautiful thinking,” especially within the context of the increasingly important conversation of mental health. In a society where platforms like social media can unfortunately cause unhealthy comparisons and toxic interactions to occur, I find it is important to be aware of such negativity and to find ways to counteract it, which is why “beautiful thinking” stood out to me.
Expanding on this definition, my idea was to take words or phrases of affirmation, make them into designs, and prep them for print (as stickers, prints, decals, etc.) so that one could see these words daily (such as on a water bottle or a bathroom mirror) and be reminded of the truth about themselves, rather than believe the lies society may tell them—the ultimate hope being that this would lead to more beautiful thinking.
In making Eunoia I was inspired by some of the words of Morgan Harper Nichols, which can be seen below. In the process, I worked to manipulate my own handwriting into a more polished font to create these designs. I plan to continue on with this project and sell these (and other affirmations) as stickers, so that my overall vision for this project may become true!
